What has to line up

Uluwatu clears 55 out of 100 April to October. A wave needs swell from the right sector, wind off the land and the tide in its window — all three, on the same morning.

Stated plainly

What can hurt you here

  • Shallow reef. The wave breaks in water you can stand in, over something that will cut you.
  • Sea urchins. Booties, and do not put a foot down blind.
  • Strong rips. Know where the channel is before you paddle out.
  • Rocks in the line-up. There are places you cannot fall.
  • A local pecking order. Wait your turn and do not drop in.
